Federal Trade Commission (FTC)

Fraud and scams reporting

Use FTC to report scams/fraud (impostors, fake prizes, phishing, shady online sellers). Your report helps law enforcement and regulators track patterns and take action, and the FTC provides step-by-step guidance on what to do next (how to stop further loss, recover accounts, etc.).

Texas Attorney General (TxAG)

Consumer complaints

Use TX AG to file a consumer complaint against a business in Texas (deceptive practices, failure to deliver, refund issues, contract disputes). They can review complaints, contact businesses, and pursue enforcement when there’s a broader pattern. This is a strong option when you want an official state-level record and escalation path.

Better Business Bureau (BBB)

Business complaint record

Use the BBB to check a business’s track record (complaints, patterns, ratings) before you hire/buy, and to file a complaint to create a public record and request a response. It’s especially useful as a due diligence step and for documenting issues, but it’s not a government agency and can’t force outcomes.

City of Houston Services

city service issues; may route to code enforcement, water billing, etc. depending on issue

Houston 311

Good for city-managed problems and documentation.

Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT)

electric, telecom, some water-related complaint pathways

File a complaint if you can’t resolve it with the provider.

Texas Department of Insurance (TDI)

home/auto/health insurance complaints, claims delays/denials, unfair practices

Good for storm-claim disputes and coverage issues.

Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR)

licensed contractors/trades: electricians, HVAC, tow trucks, etc.

Use to verify licenses and file complaints against certain licensed professions.

Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC)

real estate agents/brokers, inspectors, and some related complaints

Helpful for inspection disputes or agent misconduct complaints.

Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV)

dealer complaints, title/registration issues, odometer concerns

Useful for “car dealer won’t give title” type problems.

Texas Health and Human Services (HHS)

nursing homes / long-term care facility complaints, certain healthcare-related grievances

More “care quality” than billing, but important for consumer protection.
